Reasons for Labeling of Genetically Engineered Foods
نویسنده
چکیده
Based on the scientific uncertainty surrounding both the molecular characterization of genetically engineered (GE) crops as well as the detection of potential allergenicity, there is more than enough uncertainty to decide to require labeling of foods produced via GE as a risk management measure as a way to identify unintended health effects that may occur post approval. If foods are not labeled as to GE status, it would be very difficult to even identify an unexpected health effect resulting from a GE food.

Since 1990s genetically modified foods began to appear in the market place. The most common genetically modified products are soy bean, corn, cotton and canola and the most important genetically modified characteristics are herbicide tolerance and insect resistance. Worries about safety of genetically modified foods led to establishment of labeling rules. Since 1997 based on regulations of Euro...

Thank you for the opportunity to present testimony on the constitutional and legal issues surrounding H.112, a bill that would require the labeling of food and food products derived from genetically engineered (GE) organisms. My name is Michael Hansen and I am a senior scientist at Consumers Union (CU), the policy and advocacy arm of Consumer Reports, whose headquarters is located in Yonkers, N...

On May 8, 2014, Vermont passed the Vermont Genetically Engineered Food Labeling Act (Act) requiring labels on certain genetically engineered foods. Once the bill takes effect July 1, 2016, all Vermont-retailed foods with more than 0.9% of their total weight in genetically modified ingredients must be labeled with language stating, "may be partially produced with genetic engineering." As genetic...

Detection of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in food is an important issue for all the subjects involved in food control and customer’s right. Due to the increasing number of GMOs imported to Iran during the past few years, it has become necessary to screen the products in order to determine the identity of the consumed daily foodstuffs. In this study, following extraction of genomic DNA ...
